Best Buy Holiday Story featuring Maya Rudolph – 2013
In this Best Buy Christmas holidays commercial Maya Rudolph reads us the story of “a lady named Judy” on her holiday adventure at Best Buy. This commercial is similar in format to the Pieumph commercial with Will Arnett.
(Maya Rudolph): Twas the lady named Judy who walked out the door with a wicked Christmas list that fell down to the floor
(Best Buy employee): A Microsoft Surface Tablet
(Judy): With Office too?
(Best Buy employee): A two in one Sony Vaio Tap-11 PC
(Judy): For Lou
(Best Buy employee): A powerful LG G2 smartphone
(Maya Rudolph): That’s some hot tech talk. Now her nieces and nephews have holiday treasure, they’ll be like “yeo, Aunt Jude’s are like the best aunty ever”
(Announcer): Great gifts like the new Surface at your ultimate holiday showroom, Best Buy.
Claims made in this Christmas tale:
- What the commercial said: A Microsoft Surface Tablet … With Office too?
- What most people would think this means: If I buy a Surface tablet I will get Microsoft Office with it for free
- What it really means: On the screen, the following extremely small fine-print is shown:
Sequence shortened. Surface 2 comes with Office 2013RT
The Microsoft Surface 2 does come with Microsoft Office, but it is “Microsoft Office 2013RT“. The “RT” means that this version of Office will only run on Microsoft Surface tablets, not on Windows PC’s. There is no deception here other than the fine print, but many people may incorrectly assume that they can use this copy of MS Office on their Windows PC if they buy a Surface tablet, which is not the case.
What the commercial said: Great gifts like the new Surface ; (shown on screen: A Surface tablet and the words “Low Price Guarantee”)
- What most people would think this means: If I get a Surface tablet at Best Buy it is guaranteed to be the lowest price
- What it really means: The screen, the following extremely small fine-print is shown:
Keyboard sold separately. Find a lower price on qualifying products online or in store and we’ll match it. Learn more at BestBuy.com/lpg
The fine print says that the keyboard shown does not come with the Surface and must be purchased separately. It also mentions that for the low price guarantee you must find a “qualifying” product and to find out more details, you must go to their website. Because of the conditions and stipulations in the guarantee some people may think that the use of the “Low Price Guarantee” is deceptive. To learn more about the Best Buy low price guarantee see our review on the Will Arnett Best Buy commercial by clicking HERE.
This short commercial only makes two claims. The first, easily confusing to many people, the second, regarding the low price guarantee, many may consider deceptive.
