DirecTV Squirrels Attack Voice Control
In this ad for DirecTV’s voice control feature we see Dave attacked by squirrels, who “just aren’t listening”. This advert is similar to other ads for DirecTV’s voice control such as the Man With The Neck Tattoo commercial with a near-identical script.
What this ad says:
(Dave, talking to the squirrels): Go away!
(Announcer): The squirrels just aren’t listening to Dave. No, they don’t seem to care what he says.
(Dave, as the squirrels attack and jump on him): Back off!
(Announcer): But his DirecTV sure does. With DirecTV Voice Control Dave can just say “find kids movies” and his young-ins are neck deep in family fun. Oh if only getting the squirrels to stop was easy as getting a little Ice Age. Search and record with just your voice. Call 1-800-DIRECTV
Claims made and what they really mean:
- What the commercial said: With DirecTV Voice Control Dave can just say “find kids movies” and his young-ins are neck deep in family fun / Search and record with just your voice
- What some people might think that means: If I have DirecTV Voice Control I can search and record with just my voice
When the announcer makes these claims, the following very fine-print is shown on the screen:
Requires an iPhone or Android phone with DIRECTV App and home-based Wi-fi connected to a HD DVR (model HR24 or later). Advanced Receiver fee applies. Additional data charges may apply. Scheduler requires a DirecTV login. In rare instances scheduled recordings may not be recognized. Other conditions apply. Call or visit direcTV.com/voice for details.
Based on this fine print, you can search and record with just your voice only if you have a smartphone, home wifi, a DirecTV login, and a specific DirecTV DVR which may require you to pay advanced receiver fees.
Can you really use just your voice to search and record with DirecTV?
According to the fine print in this commercial, the answer is “NO”. You cannot search and record with just your voice.
