Vonage is an service that allows you to replace your telephone service with their internet-based “Voice Over IP” (VOIP) service. Vonage uses your internet connection for your phone calls instead of the old-fashioned telephone company lines.
I am 100% certain that I am over paying for my home-phone… Trust me, it’s a lot of money… I feel like I’m getting duped.. I discovered Vonage, I was like, “ok, thank god”. Stop paying too much for your home phone service. Sign up for Vonage now and get unlimited calling to over 60 countries for $9.99 a month for the first 3 months and now get the same great rates from your home and mobile phone. I’m Cheryl Roberts and this is the last bill before I switched to Vonage.
Phrases in this advertisement and what they really mean:
- What they said: Get unlimited calling to over 60 countries for $9.99 a month for the first 3 months and now get the same great rates from your home and mobile phone It’s time to get rid of that unwanted hair forever
- What some people might think that means: I can all almost anywhere in the world for only $9.99/month from my home phone or my cellphone.
- What it really means: In very fine print the following restrictions are shown: Rate excludes certain call types such as calls to cell phones depending on destination. Pay per minute calls will be charged at our low international rates. Unlimited calling and other residential plan services are based on normal residential personal non-commercial use. See our Reasonable Use Policy and Terms of Service at Vonage.com for full details. Calls made from mobiles may use airtime and incur charges. This all means that this pricing is intended for home (non business) Vonage customers only . It also states that you may have additional cellphone charges if using Vonage from your mobile phone (depending on your mobile carrier). Of course as clearly stated, this pricing is only valid for the first 3 months of your Vonage service. After 3 months the rate goes to $25.99 per month, plus additional fees and taxes, and these prices are only valid if you sign up for a one-year term.
What is not mentioned in any Vonage television ad:
What is never mentioned in any Vonage ad is that Vonage is not a telephone service. “Old fashioned” telephone service uses dedicated, self-powered telephone company wires to bring the telephone service into your home. While “old fashioned” and expensive, this type of phone service is extremely reliable, operates even when the power is out, and has fool-proof 911 emergency service.
Vonage is a “telephone-like” service which requires power and a high-quality internet connection. This type of voice service can often have poor quality due to internet speed or ‘quality’ and you do not have backup power, you will have no service in the event of a power outage. There may also be issues with the reliability of 911 service. This is less of an issue recently, but there is still potential for problems relating to 911 service.
The Vonage commercial is clear that the $9.99 per month rate is only valid for the first 3 months of your Vonage service, but it is only mentioned in very fine print that you must agree to a one-year Vonage contract and that there are also additional fees and taxes. Although not outright deceptive, many people may easily miss the extremely small fine-print and be fooled by the wording in this commercial.
