Claims statements made in this commercial:
- Claim: It’s likely your detergent. See over time, Cascade Platinum’s triple cleaning formula delivers brilliant shine Finish Gel can’t beat. It even helps keep your dishwasher sparkling
- What some people might think that means: Cascade Platinum will make my dishes cleaner and will clean the inside of my dishwasher
- What it really means: Based on the wording used, the Kitchen Counselor is comparing Cascade Platinum to “Finish Gel” a competing Gel dishwasher detergent. So it may be true that if you are currently using Finish Gel, Cascade Platinum may give better results, however since Cascade Platinum was not tested against any other dishwasher detergents, it is possible that the dishwasher detergent you are currently using could work better than Cascade Platinum.
Fine print and disclaimers used in this commercial:
While showing side by side comparisons of silverware and glassware the following fine-print is shown at the bottom of the screen:
After 15 cycles in hard water lab test. Finish is a registered trademark of Reckitt Benckiser
While showing the side by side comparison of the inside of dishwasher machines the following fine print is shown at the bottom of the screen:
After 20 cycles in hard water lab test. Finish is a registered trademark of Reckitt Benckiser
What the fine print means:
The results shown in the comparison pictures are the result of “hard water lab” testing. No data is given on the mineral content of the hard-water used meaning we don’t know exactly how “hard” it is but we can assume that it is at least has hard as the worst hard water in America. This means that if you do not have ‘hard water’ or if your water is not as hard as the water used in these tests, the results will likely not be as dramatic or as bad as shown.
This commercial does not use any deceptive wording but some people might miss the fact that it’s comparisons apply only to one competing product. Many might also assume that their dishes could be as bad as the side-by-side comparison pictures, which is most likely not the case.
