McDonalds BBQ McRib Is Back
This commercial for McDonald’s McRib (pork) sandwich and others like it are playing in various areas of the country announcing that the BBQ McRib sandwich is back. There are several versions of the commercial, many with different actors. The name of actor that plays the guy eating the McRib Sandwich in this version is Grandison Madison Phelps.
What the McRib commercial says:
Barbecue bliss. Topped with pickles and slivered onions. Real pork for real pork lovers. The one and only McDonalds McRib. More deliciousness to love.
What the McRib commercial claims and what it really means:
This commercial and most other versions of the McRib commercial make one significant claim: The McRib Sandwich is made with real pork. When this claim is made, we usually see images on the screen of the rib-shaped McRib meat being dipped in BBQ sauce or the rib-shaped meat being placed onto the sandwich bread. This could lead some people to assume that the McRib is made from real pork ribs, or that the McRib is actually a pork-rib sandwich.
Is the McRib real pork?
The McRib is a ‘restructured meat product’ much the same as a chicken McNugget is made from ‘parts’, ground up, pressed together, and squished into a nugget shape. For a pork product like the McRib, it is likely made from ground up pork parts, then mixed with salt, water and other seasonings before being squished into a rib shaped mold and cooked.
Technically, the McRib does contain real pork.
Is the McRib a real pork rib?
The McRib does contain real pork, however based on published reports the McRib is not a “real rib” nor is it made from all rib meat. As mentioned above, it seems to be more of a “FrankinRib” made into the shape of rib meat.
The commercials for the McRib use wording and images that some people might misunderstand to mean that the McRib is “made from real ribs”, which is not the case.
