Product: The Pocket Hose
Commercial: Introducing the Pocket Hose, featuring Richard Karn
The Pocket Hose is garden hose designed to expand when used and shrink down to a small, compact size when not in use. The Pocket Hose is very similar to the DAP X Hose.
What Rickard Karn says in this ad:
This hose is great! You just turn on the water and the Pocket Hose grows and grows and grows into a full length hose. I love watching that! Say goodbye to those old-fashioned giant hoses that become a twisted, tangled mess, pick a Pocket Hose! It’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Until you turn on the tap. That’s when this miniature marvel suddenly transforms into a giant hose, right before your eyes!
Key words and phrases in this TV commercial and what they really mean:
Just turn on the water and this hose grows and grows into a full-length hose: Some might assume that the pocket hose will expand in size to a 50ft, 75ft, or 100 foot has as shown previously in the commercial. However, the term ‘full length hose’ is not defined. Later in the commercial it specified that the Pocket Hose being offered for sale is 25 feet in length. Technically, the Pocket Hose does expand to “full length”, however not necessarily the same full length as the other hoses shown on the TV commercial.
I love watching that!: Referring to watching the Pocket Hose expand, the commercial shows a Pocket Hose expanding as it fills with water. During this time the words “time lapse shown” are displayed in very small print. This means that the Pocket Hose does not grow or expand as quickly as shown on the TV commercial.
Say goodbye to those old fashioned giant hoses that become a twisted, tangled mess: One might assume that by purchasing the Pocket Hose shown in the commercial, you would be able to replace your “giant” hose. If your giant hose is a standard 50 foot, 75 foot, or 100 foot long hose, most would agree that the 25 foot Pocket Hose shown would not be a good replacement. The reference to a tangled mess, although common, is easily avoided with any garden hose with care.
It’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand: A Pocket Hose completely void of any water does appear to fit in the palm of Richard Karn’s hand. However the length of the Pocket Hose is not disclosed. Since the Pocket Hose offered in this commercial is 25 feet it would not be a legitimate comparison to compare the size to a “full length” hose any longer than 25 feet.
It’s so rugged it comes with a 10 year Money Back Guarantee: The TV commercial does not disclose any terms of the money back guarantee, nor do we have any guarantee that Telebrands, the distributor/maker of the Pocket Hose will be in business 10 years from now to honor the money back guarantee. For more details on money back guarantee scams see this page: Money Back Guarantee rip offs.
It’s un-kinkable: There does not appear to be any deception in this phrase. The Pocket Hose commercial makes the claim that the hose cannot kink.
Two Pocket Hoses take up less space than a paint can: When actor Richard Karn makes this claim, what appear to be two of the smallest, 25 foot Pocket Hoses are shown. While this claim of two, completely empty 25 foot Pocket Hoses does appear to be true, it may not be true for the larger versions of the hose.
Why keep hassling with a tangled hose, a heavy hose, a filthy hose: An empty Pocket Hose is likely to be less heavy than a standard hose, and based on the claims of the TV commercial, will not tangle. However no claim is made earlier in the commercial that it will remain clean or will not become ‘filthy’. This phrase seems to imply that the Pocket Hose will remain clean, however the commercial gives no supporting information that the Pocket Hose can or will remain any cleaner than any other type of garden hose.
You’ll love this hose!: Actor Richard Karn looks right into the camera, points at us and declares “you’ll love this hose”. There is no supporting data from customer surveys, or any other source indicating that we will in fact, love this hose. Customer reviews of the Pocket Hose at Amazon.com rank the Pocket Hose an average of 2.1 out of 5 stars with 13 5-star reviews and 44 1-star reviews as of April 2013. It would appear, based on the data from customers who purchased and reviewed the Pocket Host at Amazon.com, that this phrase is not true and many in fact do not love their Pocket Hose.
Order now and you can get a second Pocket Hose!: The words “special offer” are displayed on the screen in reference to the second Pocket Hose. However there is no price shown for the second Pocket Hose, nor is the word ‘free’ used. In very small, near unreadable print the words “pay separate fee” is shown.
The Pocket Hose commercial makes several references to the small size of the Pocket Hose vs a “full size” hose but never clearly compares the Pocket Hose to a similar length garden hose; this could trick many people into thinking that the 25 foot Pocket Hose shown is comparable to a 100 foot garden hose. Actor Richard Karn (from the TV series Home Improvement) tells us we will “love the Pocket Hose”, which based on customer data at Amazon.com appears to be false.
