TMobile “Day 392 of 730” Upgrade When You Want commercial with Bill Hader
This is one many of T-Mobile’s “Upgrade when you want” television commercials. In this particular commercial (“Day 392 of 730”) a mugger confronts Bill Hader in a dark and empty parking garage and demands his cellphone. The mugger then changes his mind when he sees how old Hader’s phone is. Hader then demands that the thief take is phone.
Transcript of the commercial:
Thief: Alright, give me your phone
Hader: (hands over his old cellphone)
Thief: Is this the phone you use?
Hader: Yah. It’s sweet. Do you want the charger?
Thief: I don’t want this
Hader: It’s a good phone man
Thief: This is not a good phone! This isn’t even a gun, it’s my hand
Hader: I don’t care.. Take it away
Thief: I work at the car wash, you know who I am
Hader: Take the phone!
Thief: No, I don’t want the phone!
Announcer: Two years is too long to wait. Introducing Jump from T-Mobile, upgrade when you want, not when you’re told.
Claims made in this TMobile commercial and what they really mean:
- What the commercial said: Upgrade when you want, not when you’re told
- What most people might think that means: If I get on the T-Mobile Jump plan, I can upgrade my phone whenever I want, not when I am told I can upgrade
- What it really means: On the screen in fine-print we can see some details about the Jump plan, not mentioned by the announcer: “Upgrade up to twice a year, after 6 months. Add deductible may apply. Trade-in of eligible phone required. Get JUMP pricing and program details in participating stores“
Further details are listed on the T-Mobile JUMP website page:
Deductible will apply if traded-in device is lost/stolen, not in good working order, does not power on, or has liquid damage or broken screen.
Limited time offer; subject to change. Qualifying service plan with financed device on new lines required. Upgrades available 6 months after enrollment and up to 2 times in a 12-month period, beginning on the date of the first upgrade. JUMP! must be added within 14 days of qualified device purchase. Device pricing may vary based on approved credit. Offer may not be available in all locations. NY residents must use JUMP! benefits prior to completing 2 insurance claims in 12/mos. JUMP Upgrades from T-Mobile; trade-in benefits through CWork Solutions, LP. Program fees paid to CWork. No separate insurance fees, except in NY.
After reading through all of the T-Mobile JUMP restrictions, we can see that to upgrade whenever you want, you must first wait 6 months, you can also only upgrade two times in any 12 month period. Additionally, you may have to pay a ‘deductible’ to upgrade, you must trade-in your old phone, and you can only upgrade or trade-in an ‘eligible’ phone. If your phone is not on TMobile’s “eligible list” (which we are unable to locate) you cannot upgrade.
Is it true? Can you upgrade with T-Mobile Jump, whenever you want?:
Based on our reading of the barely-visible restrictions, NO – With T-Mobile JUMP, you cannot upgrade whenever you want, and based on our limited poll of people that have fully read and understand the restrictions, everyone we asked told us this claim of “upgrade whenever you want” is not only deceptive, but, a lie.
